20 Lessons Learned by my Mid-Twenties

So I’ve officially made it to a quarter of a century and what a journey its’ been so far. When I was a teen I always thought I would have my life sorted by my mid-twenties but here we are and I am still living at home with no clue about which direction to take my career and a mountain of debt I need to really start tackling. Although these posts are a bit cliché, I wanted to share 20 lessons that I have learnt in the last 25 years!

  • Put your phone down and enjoy life more. When I was growing up mobile phones didn’t land on the scene until I was in my mid-teens and I use to spend so much more quality time with my friends before screens took over.
  • Don’t dwell on the past now you can’t change it, you can only learn from the mistakes you have made. This took me a while to learn but I try and take away at least one positive from any bad experience I go through.
  • Stop trying to please everyone, because the only person’s happiness who matters is your own and you should never, ever put anybody else’s happiness above yours.
  • Dreams can and will change and thats ok. When I was 5 I wanted to be a great magician, when I was 12 I wanted to be a prima ballerina, when I was 16 I wanted to be a lawyer and now I’m 25 I don’t have a bloody clue.
  • The grass isn’t always greener on the other side despite what you may think. Always weigh up the pros and cons to any situation and never make any rash decisions.
  • You aren’t going to be friends with everyone and that doesn’t make you a bad or evil person, some people just aren’t compatible. That doesn’t mean you have to be unpleasant or rude to each other, you just don’t need to make any social plans together.
  • Travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. It helps you grow as a person, challenges you and give you a real taste of the world. One thing money cannot buy is memories and they are most important.
  • Embrace the quiet life because there is absolutely nothing wrong than wanting to spend the evening tucked up in bed binging on your favourite box sets.
  • Stop comparing yourself to others because all your are doing is slowing yourself down. Celebrate your achievements and compete only with yourself, you will find you will get a lot further.
  • Always spend within your means. Credit cards and overdrafts should be used as a last resort only and not just for your latest shopping trip. The interest rates alone should be enough to put anyone off but always make sure you make a repayment plan should you need to dip into one.
  • Everything happens for a reason, there’s a reason you didn’t get that incredible job opportunity or Dishy Damian from the office rejected you – just be patient it will all work itself out.
  • Time is valuable and we shouldn’t waste it staring at screens. You can never get time you’ve wasted back so make sure you spend it wisely with the people who matter the most.
  • Learn to love yourself because until you give yourself a chance and learn to accept all your flaws, nobody else will be able to love them either.
  • Apologise for your mistakes because you cannot grow and develop until you acknowledge when you are in the wrong and accept your mistakes.
  • Always take your make-up off after a night out because leaving it on ages your skin and this is not something that can be reversed.
  • Start saving as soon as you can because you never know when you are going to need a rainy day fund and its much better to dip into that then a credit card.
  • You are never going to have it all figured out, even when you are 80 and retired so don’t panic if you are feeling lost. That’s a perfectly natural feeling it just takes some of us longer to figure things out.
  • Friendships will change as you grow older and you will realise which friends are toxic and need to be cut out and which ones are worth the investment.
  • Heartbreak is the worst feeling in the world but you will get over it. Just because that relationship didn’t work out, it doesn’t mean you will never find love again.
  • There is no perfect moment to start anything other than right now. You could end up waiting forever for the perfect moment and then miss you chance so don’t be afraid to take on a new challenge.
