The new Hassle Free Selling App with No Fees

Spring is my favourite time of year when the days start to get longer, the sun starts making an appearance and my general mood is more uplifted and productive. This Spring was no different and over the long bank holiday weekends I decided to have the mother of all spring cleans and sort through all the bits and pieces I have been hoarding away. Up until recently I wouldn’t have described myself as a hoarder but I am one of those people who keeps outfits for specific events or scenarios and 3 years later I am still waiting for the moments to come around. I’ve decided its time to part with these unworn gems for more reasons than one.

I’ve reached the point where I open my wardrobe and I am so overwhelmed with how much is in there that I just opt for the same 5 outfits on repeat. I’m also struggling a bit with finding my own personal style and so I want to strip it right back to the basics and essentially start over with good quality pieces. I’ve picked out the basics and anything I haven’t worn in the last year has been moved onto the to be sold pile. The infamous to be sold pile, yes – I am sure you have heard of it, I am pretty sure every house has something similar. The problem is my to be sold pile has extended into three massive ikea bags full to the brim and now it needs to go because we really don’t have the space to store all this excess stuff.

I look at the over flowing pile everyday and its become quite daunting – I simply don’t have the time to spend hours listing it all. Plus once you filter in listing price, paypal fees and ebay fees you`re losing a couple of quid per item and for some stuff it doesn’t make it viable to even bother selling. I wanted something quick, easy and hassle free where I can upload items in seconds and people can purchase them straight away with no faff – that’s where Mercari comes in.

About the App

Mercari is a community powered mobile marketplace launched in 2013 in Japan. After becoming Japan’s number one mobile marketplace with over 60 million downloads globally, Mercari’s next move was to tackle the European market starting with the UK. Mercari launched in 2017 offering an easy-to-use app which is completely free to download but most importantly is completely fee-free so sellers take 100% of the money they make selling their items. Mercari has a wide range of different items available including clothing, beauty products, electronics and homeware.

Buying

Buying on the app is super quick and easy. You can search for what you`re looking for and then filter by price, by brand or by colour and then you just click on an item to read more about it. If you want to ask the seller a question or need some more information just click chat and ask away or alternatively you can just click buy now and pay with either a credit or debit card or Paypal. The app also allows you to make an offer to a buyer so it is easy to haggle prices down and bundle items together. There are no hidden fees so the price you see is the price you pay and this includes the postage cost so you don’t have to worry about that being added on at the end. They hold your payment for 8 days and it doesn’t release to the seller until the item has been received and you’re happy with it. Once you’re happy with the goods you leave the buyer feedback, they leave you feedback and then the payment is released.

If there are any problems they have a dedicated customer service team to help with any problems who aim to reply within 24 hours. If your item hasn’t arrived within 7 days of posting simply report it as lost and they will process a refund. If the item arrives and it is not how you expected Mercari cover the return cost and then refund you fully as long as you advise them within 3 days of receipt. Their Buyer Guarantee covers you to make sure you feel safe when purchasing on the app but keep in mind as soon as you have rated a seller this is irreversible and you cannot make any claims.

Selling

Selling on the app couldn’t be easier and you can pretty much get an item up in less than a minute. I tend to bulk take photos on the weekend and then just upload a handful of items whenever I get a spare 5 minutes. The price you select is a flat price including postage so keep this in mind when listing heavier, bulkier items which can end up costing £4-£5 in postage and packaging costs. Once you’ve sold an item you’ll be paid automatically once the buyer has received the item and you have rated each other. This does mean you have to cover the postage costs before receiving the funds but this policy ensures all parties in the community feel safe. As soon as you have rated each other the funds are released into your balance and you can withdraw as and when you need to. My one and only gripe about the app is that it does take 2-3 working days for the funds to clear into your account so just bear that in mind when selling.

If the buyer has received the item but has not rated you or raised a dispute, Mercari will automatically rate you and release the funds within 4 days if posted via Mercari postage or 9 days if an alternative courier. Mercari does give you the option to buy postage through the app but this is through Hermes so I would never personally use them. I send all my parcels second class signed for and make sure to keep the receipts but so far I have sold 10 items without any problems at all.

So what are you waiting for? It couldn’t be easier to have a spring clean and get rid of all those unwanted items. You can find me over at @tanyanoreenxo, plus if you sign up using my invite code ‘EBQXGN‘ and you’ll get an £2 to spend on anything you like!
