Living in Southampton during University I saw many a cruise ship come and go and I was absolutely fascinated by the idea. Having only been on a cruise ship once before I was very excited when I was invited to spend the day aboard P&O Britannia* with Southampton Bloggers for the special première of their upcoming show Astonishing. This is a brand new magic show produced by BAFTA winning presenter and entertainer Stephen Mulhern and performer Jonny Wilkes. The show is a combination of music, dance, illusion and mystery combining the talents of Stephen and Jonathan with the incredible choreography of Paul Domaine and the mind-blowing tricks of illusionist Guy Barrett.
We arrived at Ocean Terminal where we followed the red carpet to check in. Whilst waiting to go through security we were introduced to magician Colin Phillips who delivered some incredible close-up tricks as a warm up before the show. It was clear by this point that we were in for a magical morning as Colin’s tricks left most of us speechless. He delivered three tricks to a stunned audience and we were all left mesmerised.
Britannia is designed for the modern British holidaymaker with the sophistication and luxury of a five-star hotel throughout. She is the flagship of the P&O fleet and built exclusively for the British market – in fact so vast is this cruise ship she holds 3647 passengers and 1350 crew. Once onboard we made our way through the atrium and passed the spectacular starburst centrepiece spanning over an impressive three floors. We made our way to the Crystal Room for welcome drinks and canapés before heading to the Headliners Theatre for the main show.
The show is currently live on three P&O ships: Britannia, Azura and Ventura. I have never seen a magic show live and so was unsure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. The show takes entertainment to a new level with dazzling dance moves, mind blowing illusions and plenty of surprises along the way. The tricks and illusions were astounding and left the audience gasping in disbelief throughout. The audience even get to participate in an interactive card trick which worked for every single member of the auditorium and left us all astounded.
After the show we headed to the Oriental restaurant onboard to sample the Afternoon Tea. We were treated to delicious pastries and scones, fresh seafood sandwiches and decadent desserts to feast on while we discussed the show and were treated to even more tricks and illusions from magician and mind reader Robert Fox. We then disembarked at the end of a wonderful day – but not before we dreamt of stowing away on the ship before she set sail to her next destination…
Astonishing is a revolutionary magic and illusion show which will have you captivated from start to finish and is perfect for the whole family to enjoy. If you have the chance to experience Astonishing make sure you do but just make sure you prepare for intrigue and wonder.
