A Lazy Girl’s Guide to Dressing for a Heatwave

If you told me at the beginning of the year that 2018 would bring about the worst winter in over 25 years followed by one of the hottest summers on record I would not have believed you. Yet here we are in the midst of heatwave, struggling to survive in the soaring temperatures. For the first time in a long time, England is experiencing an actual Summer and I think it’s safe to say none of us were prepared for this sudden rise in temperature. Largely my summer wardrobe consists of three dress, two pairs of shorts and a couple of summery tops thrown in for good measure. With sunny days usually few and far between, I only really need a handful of outfits to get me through the warmer days, so I’ve never felt the need to expand on my summer wardrobe or invest in anymore pieces.

Initially when the heatwave hit I assumed this would only last a week or two at max so I simply exhausted said outfits waiting for the cooler temperatures to return. Once I realised this weather was here to stay I rather quickly came to the realisation that I needed to expand my summer wardrobe and fast or else face melting into a puddle. When it comes to fashion I am quite lazy and usually opt for pieces that are easy to style and compliment other pieces I already own. I took the same approach when browsing for summer items as I didn’t want to splurge on hundreds of new pieces that will barely last till the end of the season.

Coupled with what I already had, I put together a small capsule wardrobe to see me through the heatwave but more importantly that would last more than three wears. I opted for classical, easy to style pieces which I can literally chuck on and go without much of a second thought. Today I thought I would do a roundup of my fashion staples for dressing for a heatwave – lazy girl style!

The little yellow dress

Forgot the LBD this year we’re all about the LYD! Whatever your style whether you`re into floaty and flowy or short and skater style – there is something on the highstreet for everyone. I picked up this midi dress on a whim from Primark after I completely ran out of heatwave appropriate clothing and it’s been my most worn piece of the summer. It’s so easy to chuck on with a pair of sandals or trainers and off you go. The lightweight material and spaghetti straps keep you cooler in the burning heat and the slit doesn’t expose to much skin and allows you to move around without feeling too restricted.

The summer sandal

When it comes to summer footwear I only have a handful of options as I am not really keen on flashing my feet heatwave or not. I can’t walk in flip flops to save my life and slides are just a complete no go. I have two staple pair of sandals which are my go to – one casual lace up pair perfect for everyday wear and super comfortable for long days out – and one slightly snazzier pair, perfect for a night out or to dress up a plain outfit. I find that black is so easy to style and goes with absolutely everything so I don’t need to worry finding shoes that compliment every outfit. Plus the simple design means they have lasted season after season.

The basket bag

The basket bag is a staple in any Summer wardrobe whether you prefer big and beachy or small and structured. If you want an instant way to make an outfit slightly more summery and feminine then just grab a basket bag and you`re good to go. This year the highstreet was flooded with different styles and I struggled to stop myself from buying them all. I currently only have four in my wardrobe but they are a range of different styles and sizes. Accessories are the perfect way to change up an outfit or really polish off a look so I tend to ensure I always have some strong staple pieces for each season.

The denim shorts

A staple in any summer/ holiday wardrobe is a good trusty pair of denim shorts. Being 5ft 9 it has been quite difficult to find a pair of shorts that I feel comfortable in because I have found that most denim shorts on the highstreet barely cover my cheeks, let alone anything else! I prefer a more classic, vintage inspired pair free from embellishment, embroidery on any over the top customisation. I found a gorgeous mid wash pair from boohoo which keep my dignity in check but are also super easy to style as they can be worn with just about everything.

The summer blouse

A staple in any summer wardrobe is the perfect white summer blouse. Whether your like fine embroidery or embellishments galore, there is always thousands to choose from. I picked up this little off the shoulder number from new look a few years ago and I love the embroidery on the front and the fringing around the sleeves. The light fabric is perfect for hotter days and the loose fit means I stay nice and cool. Such a versatile and easy to wear piece, I just know I am going to get so much wear out of this for many Summer’s to come.

The culotte jumpsuit

No summer wardrobe would be complete without a special occasion piece perfect for a garden party or summer wedding. This floral culotte jumpsuit has actually been in my wardrobe for a while now but I just haven’t had the confidence to wear it. I finally dug it when I  needed something to wear for my day onboard Independence of the Seas and I’ve been in love with it ever since. The colours are perfect for summer and this fits in all the right places with the wide leg and high neck really complimenting my body shape. If you want easy, effortless style then grab a culotte jumpsuit.

The cat eye sunnies

Cat eye sunglasses are such a classic design and they can be worn by anyone because they flatter every face shape. Sunglasses are not something I invest in because I have lost more pairs than I can count but I did treat myself to a pair of cat eye sunnies from Quay Australia in the ASOS sale a few years back which are now my go to. I love the wide rectangular tinted lens and the contrasting frame and arm colours making this classic style a little more chic. Sometimes I think black sunglasses can be a little harsh so I really love the colour of these and I find the style really compliments the shape of my face.

The white tee

Every capsule starts with quality basics and no summer wardrobe would be complete without a classic white t-shirt. I didn’t want to spend much on the basics but I needed something that would be good quality and last longer than three washes. I picked up this 100% cotton tee from topshop for £10 which perfect for layering or just for wearing on it’s own with a simple pair of denim shorts. Cotton keeps the body a lot cooler in summer because it is lightweight, breathable and soaks up sweat. I really like the folded seam around the sleeves too because it just gives this basic a little added detail.

The striped linen dress

One summer trend that will never go out of fashion is stripes. They are easy to wear, require minimal effort and give off a classic chic vibe when styled the right way. Whether you opt for a structured shirt with a distressed pair of jeans or a simple summer dress teamed with wide sun hat – stripes can be worn by everyone and anyone and when worn the right way can compliment every body type. I opted for a linen button front dress which is a dream on the hotter days because it is so lightweight and keeps me so much cooler. Layered over a white tee this is the perfect way to achieve summer chic with zero effort.

The classic espadrilles

Espadrilles are versatile, chic and comfortable and all in all just the perfect shoe for summer. There’s no fuss with buckles or lace up ribbons you just shove them on and you`re ready to go. Last year I lived in a pair of embroidered espadrilles from primark which lasted surprisingly well considering I wore them everyday for 2 months but this year I needed a refresh. I chose a more classic style in the form of these Chanel dupes because they will go with so much more in my wardrobe. The do have a slight platform which makes them super comfortable especially when worn for long periods of time.
