Reflecting on 2018: A Year in Review

The start of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on the previous year and look ahead and start planning for the new one. All over Instagram people have been sharing their highlights of 2018 and their best bits and biggest achievements. I am a big believer in celebrating even the smallest achievements but I also appreciate that this time of year can be very daunting for many people (myself included), so I decided to skip this one out and pen something for my blog instead.

January 1st hits and we are bombarded with people pledging to stop eating this, stop doing that and make all these changes to themselves and their lives in a bid to become a better version of themselves. I appreciate this kind of goal setting mentality works for many but for me it just doesn’t. I am just as guilty as the next person of setting myself hundreds of unrealistic goals only for January 12th to roll around and me to realise I have basically failed at most of them already. Last year I decided to streamline my goals and focused on six smaller goals throughout the year. Although I did manage to accomplish most of them, on reflection I found myself constantly dwelling on them and worrying about if I would achieve what I wanted to and in turn added a lot of unnecessary pressure onto myself.

I’ve spent the last few days rattling around trying to pinpoint some goals for 2019 but I’ve decided this year I am not going to set myself any. I am just going to see what happens and where this crazy journey takes me. In 2018 I learnt a lot about myself as a person and I feel like although I have grown immensely, I have so much more growing to do. I learnt how to live in the moment, how to be grateful for even the smaller details, how to focus on the positives instead of dwelling on the negatives but most importantly how to be happy in my own company. As I am looking back over 2018 there are so many amazing memories that I am so thankful to have and I’d like to think this time in a year I will feel just as happy and grateful as I do right now. Last year I put together my highlights for the year and I really enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane so this year I am going to do exactly the same. Let’s take a walk through 2018…
