Thursday is the new Friday and what better way to spend a Thursday evening than with 15 fabulous ladies, the tastiest pizzas and wine aplenty. Supermarine in Woolston has recently redesigned their menu and we were invited down by Sotonbloggers to sample their new menu of delicious wood fired, hand stretched pizzas. Pizza is the absolute way to my heart and if you know me well then you will know I have a complete and utter obsession with Franco Manca. To me an authentic pizzaeria isn’t complete without a wood burning oven so I was so excited to see an independent chain with an authentic stove oven serving up a wide range of delicious pizzas and other Italian delicacies.
Located in the Centenary Quay development just off Itchen Bridge, Supermarine pays homage to the revolutionary aviation heritage of the Hazel Road factory on the banks of the River Itchen. Part of the Mettrick’s family, Supermarine is located alongside Vospers (another string to the Mettrick’s bow) which is named after Vosper Thornycroft, the aviation factory which closed in 2003. Supermarine was the factory in which aviation history was made. From the revolutionary Supermarine S6 seaplane racer (2 time winner of an international air race for Great Britain) to the world famous Spitfire which achieved immortality defending the skies of Britain during world war two and became a symbol of freedom itself.
You will find plenty of reminders of this rich heritage from the decor they have adopted inside the restaurant. All over the walls are photographs and posters honouring the historic name they have adopted. The aesthetic is a bloggers dream with marble tables, copper pendant lighting and cosy corners with chairs you can sink into. From the moment you walk in you can sense the laid back and relaxing ambience of the restaurant as you`re greeted with beaming smiles. The space is bright and airy with floor to ceiling windows flooding the venue with natural light. In the evening the pendant lighting and candles used throughout add to the relaxing ambience.
The focal point of the restaurant is the chef’s open cooking station with its huge pizza oven in the middle of the venue. All the ingredients used are fresh and homemade and being able to see your meal being prepared really adds to the dining experience. We were shown to our beautifully laid table and offered drinks from their wide selection of wines and cocktails. The menu boasts a selection of small plates and starters, alongside authentic Italian pizzas and freshly prepared salads. The newly redesigned menu now features plenty of vegetarian and vegan options so you won’t be disappointed.
For starter we were treated to a selection of traditional Italian starters including Caprese skewers of parma ham wrapped around breadsticks, Nocellare Del Belice olives, mozzarella and tomato salad with fresh basil and the entire range of crostini’s: pesto and fresh basil, avocado and balsamic and sausage and mozzarella on sourdough bread. The latter was a firm favourite among the girls with the Caprese skeweres a close second. Next up was a selection of the pizzas for us to try which were all super crispy and bursting with flavour. The dough itself was fluffy and with the added hint of rosemary I could’ve eaten the whole base alone with some fresh garlic oil alongside.
For dessert we had the option of a chocolate pizza or salted caramel tart. I much prefer savoury to sweet so I only tried a spoonful of the caramel tart which was absolutely to die for. I need to remember to leave more room next time so I can have my own dessert! If you are looking for an affordable restaurant for a meal out or just to grab a quick bite to eat, with prices starting £8 you really can’t go wrong. Plus the 150 free parking spaces mean you can stay as long as you want and soak up the gorgeous views of the Woolston waterside.
