The Diner Westquay Watermark

Since the opening of West Quay Watermark the whole town has been in foodie heaven with so many different new spots to try out. Last week a group of us were invited in for their official launch night of the Diner an all American diner serving up all-day breakfasts, shakes, pancakes and more! As soon as the email landed in my inbox and I saw the words all day breakfast I was completely sold and the night exceeded my expectation.

Located on the lower promenade adjacent to Waterstones, the Diner delivers a retro feel right from the word go. The vibrant and old school interiors fit with theme of the restaurant where you can choose to sit in a booth, at the bar on a classic stool or just on one of the regular tables. The interior includes a milkshake machine, snow cone machine and plenty of neon signage giving the place a really authentic 50’s style as oppose to a cheap knock off. We headed straight for a booth, grabbed the menu and began the impossible decision in choosing what to have. There was something for everyone – burgers, hot dogs, wings, salads, burritos, ribs, mac’n’cheese – all the typical dishes you would find in a all star diner and more. We spent a long ol’ time deliberating until settling on some nibbles to share including freakshow chicken (buttermilk chicken with a side of very hot sauce), diner hot wings with blue cheese dip, nachos and bacon jalepeno tater tots. The portions were very generous for such reasonable prices and I definitely regretted filling up on these before my main arrived.

For my main course I chose from the All Day Breakfast selection. I eventually opted for the Lumberjack breakfast which included buttermilk pancakes, bacon, tater tots, sausage pattie and eggs served with maple syrup and whipped honey butter. Everything was absolutely divine but the star of the show form me had to be the tater tots – I don’t know why more places don’t sell them because they are just delicious. As with the sharing dishes, the mains were huge and really good value for money considering nearly all of the mains come in at under £10! You could hear satisfying murmurs all the way round the table as we tried more and more with all of us way under estimating how much food we were actually ordering.

After attempting to finish the mammoth amount of food we had ordered it was time to make our own milkshakes. I didn’t actually partake because my body doesn’t seem to be able to tolerate too much dairy at the moment but I watched as the others combined a variety of flavours to make their own delicious concoctions. It was interesting to see how each and every milkshake is made fresh with their very own milkshake machine using ice cream imported from an independent Italian Company, malt and any flavour you so desired – the overwhelming favourite was the Oreo and mint chocolate chip for sure.

After the event we were sent home with incredible goody bags filled with all the bits and pieces we would need to make our own milkshakes at home. It was a fabulous evening celebrating the launch of #ShakeItSouthampton with incredible food and incredible company. If you are looking for an affordable, quick and tasty eatery then look no further – the Diner has you covered.
